Who is Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche?

Kirti Tsenshab RinpocheThe Venerable Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche was born in Eastern Tibet, in the province of Amdo, in 1926. At a very young age (between six and eight) he was recognized as the reincarnation of the former abbot of the Kirti Gompa. He was ordained as a monk at age nine and was fully ordained at 20.

In 1955-56, at the request of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, he travelled to Lhasa to continue his studies at Drepung Monastery. He escaped from Tibet in 1959 and spent much time teaching Tibetan orphans at the Tibetan Children’s Village in Dharamsala, India.

At 45 Rinpoche began a fifteen-year retreat in a small stone hermitage above Dharamsala, “big enough for a bed, prostrations and a stove,” meditating on teachings such as Lam Rim (the Graduated Path to Enlightenment). At the request of the Dalai Lama he ended his retreat to teach those in sincere need of the realised teachings of the Buddhist tradition.

Rinpoche is one of the teachers of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and many other high Lamas. He is a recognized master of the Kalachakra Tantra and has given instruction on this tantra to the Dalai Lama and others. He has been giving teachings around the world in numerous countries, including Australia, Germany, Holland, Hong Kong, Italy, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan and the United States. Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche feels that by making his teachings available, sincere people will benefit.

Most recently (December 2005 - January 2006), Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche visited the Antarctic continent in order to offer special blessings needed to stabilize the planet and bless all the waters of the world. Rinpoche blessed these currents of water with Holy Water containing blessings from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, as well as water from all the oceans of the world and water gathered from lakes and rivers Rinpoche himself has visited. This mixing and unification of water coming from different origins is done in order to bring about pacification of extremities in weather patterns. It is believed that blessed water can stabilize and harmonize the weather in any place, especially if the weather patterns are disturbed. Extremities of climate and terrain are found on the Antarctic continent that are found nowhere else in the world. By rectifying the weather in one place the weather all over the globe is adjusted accordingly. Rinpoche has done what he set out to do and has performed the prayers and ceremonies to pacify the world’s weather patterns. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has praised Rinpoche for his humble character and commented on how many sentient beings were being benefited by Rinpoche’s travels and teachings all over the world.

Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche is one of the few great Lamas who were trained in the old Tibet. In earlier years he served as the debate partner (Tsenshab) to the Dalai Lama.

Q&A on KIRTI TSENSHAB RINPOCHE

A response by Dekyi-Lee Oldershaw

What does Rinpoche mean?

In Sanskrit, it is a title, which means “precious like a jewel”. For Tibetan Buddhists, that person has activated “bodhicitta”, the resolve to become fully enlightened in order to be capable of consoling all beings without discrimination.

Lama Zopa said of Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche, “he is ...so completely renounced…realized ... no self-cherishing thought.” What does that mean?

It means he has given up “ego”-desire, hatred, greed and confusion and generated a compassion for every living being without exception, with complete equanimity.

Completely renounced means that one has achieved complete liberation, which is a cessation of physical or mental suffering. It doesn’t mean he doesn’t get sick, but his mind is not suffering at all. For Westerners, we think of renunciation as giving up something. But renunciation in the Buddhist framework means something different. There is a giving up our delusions due to not knowing the true nature about our experiences.

There is no self-centred thought that places “me” as more important than anyone else, my happiness is more important than anyone else’s. It is complete equanimity; complete understanding and acceptance of people wherever they are and whoever they are. It is like the “good Samaritan” and saints of all religions. They are pure of heart and mind.

KTR spent 15 years in solitary meditation including seven years meditating on”Lam Rim”. What does that mean?

Rinpoche spent 15 years in a tiny hut in the foothills of the Himalayas, near Dharamsala, India. He had an attendant that would deliver food when it was needed. He would have a little stove in the cold weather and his day would have started at 3:30 a.m.

The first seven years, Rinpoche meditated on the “Lam Rim , a graduated series of foundation meditations which include all the causal ingredients for eventual enlightenment. practitioner through many levels of development.

Using this foundation, for the next three years, Rinpoche integrated the many levels of understanding by practicing the “quick path” using the techniques of tantra. Then he practiced intensely for two more years, realizing all of these as a direct experience. It was all an internal process that gradually helped him to embrace every being wholeheartedly. Part of the result is that he would gradually take on responsibility for the environment and every living being on the planet and in the universe.

When someone completes a long solitary, they are able to help people in very practical ways because they have the understanding and compassion to identify the causes of their challenges with advice and teaching that can be used directly by the person.

A tiny man, with tiny perfect feet, frail like a bird, he is the most powerful man I’ve ever met. Almost transparent, he the one who taught me the subtle yogas, some of the secret practices of the Himalayan meditators. At 80 years of age, he is more pliable than anyone I’ve seen over the age of 50 – even after he has just finished five hours of chanting, of visualizing the healing of every living being, of complete absorption into the peace and spaciousness that units us all. His presence is deeply peaceful, deeply powerful, and very humble.

What is the significance and value of the practice of meditation as practised by Rinpoche and other monks? What would be some of the differences between an ordinary person might meditate and the way a monk like KTR meditates?

An ordinary person’ s primary focus is first relaxing in this busy world, and then learning to focus their mind, either using analytical means and reflecting on different ideas that are positive. This is more like steering, taming or focussing the mind, or training in concentration on one thing, one mantra, one image. In the beginning, a lot of the emphasis is on eliminating and transforming those states of mind that have negative results; it’s called purification. Eventually that leaves us with a clearer mind.

KTR would have done these practices in other lives and brought those realizations into this one. Consequently his meditation would start from a mind that is not only completely clear, but also filled with his wish that others become free and enlightened. That is why being in his presence can be very blissful. It’s not like he’s giving you a blessing; his presence is simply a blessing. And the key is that nobody has to be a Buddhist to benefit from this.

What are Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche’s principle teachings or messages?

All of his teachings point to two main things: helping people understand how they cause themselves problems and illness by misunderstanding where their happiness needs to start from and helping them understand what they need to do to generate sustainable happiness and health.

In the West, most of what we think will make us happy over time also becomes a source for suffering and illness. Key to his teachings are understanding the simple yet profound ways to cut through misunderstandings and generate deep heartfelt understanding of other people, their situations and how to be of benefit. The active use of these principles holds a key to a deep acceptance and inner peace in any situation. Rinpoche is incredible skilled in presenting ancient profound wisdom, in ways, with examples, that you can apply to your business and family life.

How does he teach?

Rinpoche combines everyday examples with teachings. His complex teachings are encapsulated and simplified, but no less profound and transformative.

He has amazing skill at providing concise, simplified information. He creates something that’s very succinct. Because of the many years he spent in solitary retreat, deepening his understanding of the teachings of the Buddha as well as his personal experience of them, his presentation of standard Buddhist teaching comes from a pure experiential base. He has left Buddhist scholars in awe as he presents direct understanding that anyone - from a scholar to a person on the street - could apply in a new refreshing way. Essence, then example, or experience. A friend, Judy noted, “ As a new Buddhist I see volumes of teachings and it can be very overwhelming as to just what to study, but I can see there is a pure simple essence, the thread that runs through them all.”

I describe him as the bliss lama. Because of his great compassion for happiness for everyone, without discrimination, people can, by being open, to simply experiencing it - I’ve heard many people talk about the quiet inner blissful experience they’re left with by being in his presence that has later ripened into personal insight.

What does KTR do in terms of healing?

He can see behind presenting problems to the causes and all the conditions that have had to come together in dependence on each other for that symptom to appear. With that knowledge, Rinpoche often will address the ultimate cause of problems rather than what we think seems to be the presenting problem. The teachings he will be offering at Sheridan College are the most profound in identifying and transforming the fundamental cause of illness and problems of mental health. He will present the most profound healing method in Tibetan Buddhism.

What does KTR do in terms of environment?

A part of Rinpoche’s inner practice over the years has been to control and influence the elements within his body. This includes not only the gross elements of water, wind, fire, earth, etc., but the principles those elements represent. Fluidity, change and transformation, movement, space for this to all take place, and the binding principle of earth. Every phenomenon in the universe consists of these elements and principles, fundamentally. Throughout the world at sacred environmental sites, he has performed rituals and practices and blessings to help purify, pacify, problems with destructive influences on the environment.

What makes KTR a great yogi? Indeed, what makes a great yogi? Where do you find this in other traditions?

When you are around him, while you feel him there in substance, you can also experience a sense of transparency. Literally, he has transformed every cell in his body to lighter and less gross than our normal, everyday go-to-McDonald’s bodies. It’s like being with somebody completely purified. In actuality, he has spent years doing subtle yogic exercise, concentrating his breath, visualization, and complete control of his inner energy systems. As a result he has control over the elements in his own system and also externally and is able to have a very powerful influence on the environment and has performed ritual and blessings throughout the world, especially concentrating on transforming the weather and the elements, focussing on the water specifically, which in turn affects all parts of the environment.

Jesus was a great yogi. What Jesus did on the cross, with his resurrection, was the greatest example of yogic accomplishment documented in the Middle East and revered in the West. There are examples of these types of yogis in Eastern historical documents.

What is his relationship to the Dalai Lama?

He spent two years privately teaching the Dalai Lama the intricate commentary to the Kalachakra practice. It is a commentary called Stainless Light, which he’s only taught seven times in his lifetime. This practice and initiation is passed from KTR to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Kalachakra initiation is the main ritual and teaching for world peace that the Dalai Lama confers around the world as a blessing for anyone and that the Dalai Lama sees as one of the greatest ways he can benefit in these troubled times. With hundreds of requests to teach around the world, each year KTR asks his Holiness for advice on where he would be of the greatest benefit, and in 2006 he was advised to teach in Canada, as well as Israel, Russia, California and South Africa.

What is your experience with KTR?

In New Zealand, KTR was teaching a two-month retreat on Bodhisattva’s way of life; he focused mainly on how to transform anger and concentration. I was asked prepare for the lama so that people could get the most out of his teachings. In addition, my role was to lead the retreat, which meant debriefing after his teachings for the people at the retreat, helping them to deepen their understanding of the teaching and find its practical use in their own lives. I also lead meditations and prayers. KTR would teach, then we’d discuss what he taught, and then we would meditate to gain a deepening conviction of what we’d learned. It was a 12-hour day. KTR would teach for three or four hours. We would discuss together on a regular basis how to create an environment for the students so they would not only to learn but also change their perspective over time.

I also visited him in Dharamsala, where he was the Abbot of Kirti Monastery. When you visit someone like the dean of a university, he has his big office, rosewood desk, etc. Rinpoche had just a small room where he sleeps, meditates and gives personal audiences and where he keeps his altar and text cupboard.

What’s it like to talk to him?

He is a very tiny man, almost fragile, but when he speaks his voice is very strong, very powerful. He speaks in the Amdo dialect of Tibet. Though he understands English to some degree, he prefers to use a translator, so the accuracy of his advice and teaching can make the profound changes that are intended. He doesn’t want to lose anything in translation.

Sometimes it’s hard to know whether to hold your focus on the lama himself, with this constant brilliant smile, or to glance over at the translator. When he speaks, he looks at you always with a gentle chortle. He takes his time to think before he comes back with his answer, and his answers seem to be so practical that, from my side, I’m almost embarrassed I asked the question. Sometimes it’s very profound and sometimes it’s very practical. You can ask, “What should I do about ... some question that represents years of conflict?” And he’ll say, “Well, do this and then this...” A very logical, simple bit of advice that I had not considered.

How has KRT influenced on your life?

Besides profound teaching which has been life changing, Rinpoche has given me the confidence to teach in an experiential way. I hoped that people would experience the essence of the teaching, rather than walk away with scholarship alone. I now value going away to face my own demons, coming to know them and, as a consequence, transforming them. Part of the purpose of doing a retreat is so that you can come back into the world in a way that’s way more practical, more useful and with a more balance personality. He has taught me perseverance and that the goal of life is not to be comfortable but to balance comfort with my effectiveness in the world.

What has he taught you about other people?

Everyone has the capacity to be absolutely amazing. He has taught me that the pains and the hurts become something precious, the resources with which to help others once you’ve gained some understanding and insight around it. From there comes a deep confidence that no one else’s opinion can deter me. I can get all kinds of feedback from others who love or hate me, but for some reason being around him and having him recognize my worth lets me know that it’s there. He’s given me the confidence that we can establish an experiential centre for learning in Ontario. He told me that by giving up three years of my goal of going into retreat for six months of each year, I would have established a good strong foundation for a centre here.

What would be his main focus to people coming to hear him in August?

Bodhicitta — how to expand your own heart and mind beyond your own problems, to understand your own problems and consequently others.

What would you like to see happen as a result of his visit and his teachings?

My wish is that as many people as possible could be touched by his presence, that some seed, some potency, within them would wake up and germinate into whatever lets each person know their true value and their potential to make a difference in their own lives and those around them. Each person will have their own way of doing this and their own path, and their own way of expressing it.

Regardless of how many actually come to his teachings, my prayer would be that just by reading about him or seeing his picture, somehow there would be some benefit in even that.

For Buddhists in this area, the blessing he brings hopefully will strengthen the blessing the Dalai Lama brought to Toronto and Canada two years ago and help us establish a centre for southern Ontario that embodies the aspirations of the Dalai Lama. I wish this both for Tibetan Buddhists who embrace his lineage and also universally for educational programs that can help in social services, health, schools and anyone who wishes to learn and grow using the principles of loving kindness and understanding. We would like his visit to be a springboard for this centre.

News about Rinpoche's Health

News sent on: July 14th | July 16th | July 19th

Sent July 19th:

Dear friends,

this is a quick message to let you all know that Kirti Tsenshap Rinpoche and Alak are both resting in Delhi after a comfortable flight out of Tel Aviv. Rinpoche is resting and happy to be back in India. Tomorrow, July 20, they will be travelling to Dharamsala.

A lot of people have expressed the wish to visit Rinpoche in Dharamsla. It is completely understandable that most of you feel the need to see Him and communicate with Him at this time. However Rinpoche really needs the time and space to relax, adjust and just concentrate on his practices. I have to stress that all activities such as interviews, teachings, travelling etc., have been completely removed from Rinpoche's schedule.

I have relayed every message that I received and you will be very happy to know that Rinpoche acknowledged every single message and was so pleased to hear about your wishes, prayers, practices, retreats and so on.

I would like to thank all those you have send medical suggestion, advices, recommendations and inspiring stories. I have forwarded all medical emails to Rinpoche's doctors and they have assured me that they are taking every suggestion into consideration. From their side they recognise Rinpoche as being a very special person and the most unusual patient. This is one of the main reasons they have not even attempted to give us a time estimate, since they believe that Rinpoche has the power to control his physical functions. This is a remarkable remark from doctors who have just met Rinpoche for the last week. They are not students or buddhist. So when they make any recommendations they will certainly take into consideration Rinpoche's special characteristics as well.

Further Rinpoche would like to thanks the Friends of Dharma in Israel, for their exceptional level of organisation and support and the warmth of their love and care. A heartfelt thank you to those sponsors who helped with all medical and travel expenses.

Best wishes to all,

voula
